Commissioned by the Portland Youth Philharmonic for their Youth Orchestra Commissioning Initiative. Written for the Youth String Ensemble, led by director Inés Voglar Belgique.
Laura’s piece El Mundo es para todos / The World Is for Everyone was composed for string instruments. The musicians of PYP’s Young String Ensemble voted for this title which was suggested by Laura’s abuelita after hearing a draft version. The inspiration behind this new work was Inés’s suggestion to give the students challenging but fun rhythms and syncopation. Laura was also inspired by reading about Inés in the article “Embrace All Your Cultures” because she also has a mixed cultural background, and the piece reflects a mixture of different influences.
